The night guard

When listing famous paintings, Rembrandt’s The Night Guardsman should be highlighted. It was originally titled The Rifle Company of Captain Frans Bunning Cooke and Lieutenant Willem Reitenbürg and was popularly referred to as The Night Watch.

This is a group portrait commissioned by the Dutch Riflemen’s Guild. The subject is very patriotic and the lighting is masterful. But in spite of this, the clients were dissatisfied with the painting. They wanted a static ceremonial portrait, but were faced with an image of a crowd emerging from a darkened archway. No one could recognise themselves. The artist also added 16 other unidentified people to the painting.

The painting still adorned the building of the Rifle Society and remained there until 1750. After the society ceased to exist, the painting was moved to the town hall and had to be cut due to its large size.

The canvas hung in front of the fireplace for a long time, so it was covered in soot, dust and grime. Over time it became darker. In 1808, Rembrandt’s work ended up in a museum in Amsterdam. During the Second World War it was kept rolled up in a mountain cave.

After the end of hostilities it was restored and cleaned, removing the huge layer of soot that had created the effect of semi-darkness. In reality, the patrol leaves the arch at two o’clock in the afternoon, not at night.

Remarkably, this painting has been repeatedly assassinated.

This fall, the Royal Academy of Arts in London is hosting the largest exhibition of Marina Abramović: it covers 50 years of the world’s most famous performance artist and will also include video performances by Abramović in various locations of the Academy. The exhibition will showcase the artist’s most famous works, including the performance Rhythm 0 (1974), when one of the audience members put a gun to her head, Balkan Baroque, for which she received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1997, The Artist is Present (2010), when she allowed the MoMA audience to sit opposite her for hours, looking at the artist, and others.

Throughout his work, Duchamp questioned the traditional hierarchy between original and copy, worked in the ready-made genre, and was not afraid to replicate his art, thus initiating a discussion about what constitutes a work of art. The centerpiece of the Venice exhibition will be The Box in the Suitcase (1935-1941), a portable museum featuring 69 miniature copies and reproductions of Duchamp’s works that Peggy Guggenheim acquired from the artist in 1941.

Galeries Museum in Paris

The legendary Parisian fashion museum, housed in the palace of the Duchess of Gallier, who in 1978 decided to create a museum that would house works of art saved by the Duchess to popularize Parisian culture. Under the direction of the architect Leon Ginan, the museum building opened its doors in 1894, but only in 1977 did the palace become a world-famous fashion museum in Paris thanks to the exhibitions Alaïa, Dalida, Les Années 50 and Margiela-Galliera in 1988-2018. The museum is currently closed for renovation, and at the end of 2019 it will reopen to the public with a new permanent exhibition, The Gabrielle Chanel Rooms, made possible by a partnership between the museum and Chanel. The underground tunnels will hide the secrets of fashion history since the 18th century. The reconstruction of the tunnel spaces was paid for by the Parisian fashion house, and the project was designed by architect Dominique Brard. The museum is now under the coordination of Mirene Arzaluz and will soon become the only permanent fashion museum in France.
